After the announcement that long time Hendrick Nextel Cup series driver Terry Labonte would be running a limited schedule in 2005 and 2006, Kyle Busch was picked to take over the #5 Kellogg's/CARQUEST Auto Parts Chevrolet Monte Carlo for Hendrick Motorsports.

Kyle Busch became the youngest pole-sitter in NASCAR Nextel Cup Series history when he posted a track-record lap at California Speedway February 26, 2005 in his #5 CARQUEST Chevrolet. Busch, a 19-year-old Raybestos Rookie, was clocked at 38.248 seconds (188.245 mph) around the two-mile D-shaped oval, leading a pack of seven Hendrick Motorsports engines in the top dozen qualifiers. Kyle finished the AutoClub 500 in 23rd position.

Kyle ran the CARQUEST Auto Parts paint scheme on May 13th to a 7th place finish at Darlington and a disappointing 22nd at Pocono on June 11th. Then on July 9th at Chicagoland Kyle brought the CARQUEST #5 to a third place finish. He just missed the top ten at Pocono's second race of the season on July 23rd when he was 12th. The last time he drove a car with this paint scheme was in Texas in the Dickies 500 when he finished in fourth place.
